Thanks to all the players who came out for Plus tryouts. Teams have been selected. Players are being notified.
Players must try-out and be selected to play Plus soccer. The final decision will be made by the coach and additional AYSO staff. The decision is based on soccer skill level, attitude, coachability, and player position. Plus teams need strong players in the striker, midfield, defense, and keeper positions.
The Plus program provides a team for each age level unlike recreational soccer where two ages are combined in a division. For example, AYSO recreational programs combine ten-year-old players and eleven-year-old players in the Under 12 age group. The Plus program provides a team for Under 11 and a separate team for Under 12. There are also teams for Under 13 and Under 14. Click here for division guidelines.
The Plus program requires more time, travel, and commitment, so it is not right for everyone. The Plus program was developed by AYSO National for U10 through U14 players with advanced soccer skills. Recognizing the need to develop players for high school and college competition, AYSO is providing a program that will provide a higher level of training from more experienced coaches and a higher level of competition for those involved. Players participating in this program will compete against Plus teams from other regions during a season lasting form September to December. Many teams continue in the spring season as Spring Select teams. This program was designed for serious soccer players and their families. It may not be appropriate for strong athletes who compete in many sports. Our recreational program still provides many opportunities for competitive soccer with fewer demands for time and travel.
While many Plus games will be played within Area Q (Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Yorba Linda/Placentia, and Tustin), some games or tournaments will be played outside Area Q. There may be occasional Sunday games or double-headers.
Registered players who try out but are not selected for the Plus team will be notified and placed on a recreational soccer team within Region 97. Stronger players who do not make the Plus team may still have an opportunity to try-out for the winter all-star team and possibly continue into the Spring Select from our recreational program.
Plus coaches must be advanced certified in coaching and regional referee certified.
